The threat of drivers performing a DUI (driving under the influence) is a serious problem in the US, with very real consequences. DUI accidents directly affect 50% of the nation, as 1 in every 2 people will be involved in a DUI-related accident in their life. DUI crashes are also the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 16-24. And DUI deaths have totaled 250,000 over the past ten years. Further numbers show that over 60% of DUI incidents are caused by 7% of those who have repeatedly been arrested for a DUI, meaning multiple offenders are the greatest threat on the road. Even then, first time offenders have typically driven drunk 87 times before being caught. All these statistics are compiled by the US Department of Transportation, and all point to the need for driver education about the consequences of a DUI. This is why many states have created a DUI School, and use it as an alternative sentencing tool for first time and low incident offenders. From showing the personal consequences of a DUI (insurance rate hikes, job & license loss, etc.) to the carnage a DUI accident can cause to others, these schools are instrumental in deterring future DUI incidents.
