Of all the DUI (driving under the influence) penalties a driver may face, one of the costliest for those involved in minor cases is the rise in auto insurance. Apart from skyrocketing insurance costs, drivers can also face the cancellation or non-renewal of an insurance policy, increases in insurance premiums and the inability to even receive insurance. Although there is the chance that an insurance company will not even know that a driver has gotten a DUI conviction, most states require the convicted to submit an SR-22 form to their insurers in order to reinstate their suspended driver's license. The SR-22 form lets the state know a driver carries liability insurance, and often the state asks for a driver to file proof of insurance for up to five years. If a driver has their insurance drop them, it can lead the state to deny reinstating their license.
