The cost of a DUI lawyer varies greatly depending on several factors including: location; his/her qualifications; and, the difficulty of the case.
Location will play a big part in how much you will have to pay for a DUI attorney. If you live in a big city, you can expect to pay somewhat less than if you live in a smaller suburb. However, if you have interviewed several attorneys, don’t just go with the one that is more expensive than any of the others – that may not be a wise idea. Talk to several and chose from a group of those that you can afford. Likewise, don’t choose one that is drastically lower than all the others.
The attorney’s experience and success in DUI cases will also be a determining factor in what their fee will likely be. Put the ones with the qualifications and experience you are looking in groups according to fee so that you can make a wise decision.
Another thing to consider is whether or not this is your first, second, or third DUI charge. A third charge may mandate that you hire a much more experienced attorney. How difficult is the case? Is this a misdemeanor or felony? Are you facing aggravating circumstances when you appear in court – for example were you eluding the officer, speeding, or was there an accident?
It is impossible here to give you a cost for the lawyer, because the charge can be anywhere from $500 to $15,000 depending on the jurisdiction and the charges you are facing. All of the issues listed above can make a significant difference in the cost to hire an attorney.
