Question:

Will I be able to get auto insurance after a drunk driving arrest?

Answer:

SR-22 is a form insurance companies file with the state as proof of insurance coverage. Some states, but not all, require a driver to have an insurance company file an SR-22 after a drunk driving arrest and each state has different requirements for the kinds of insurance and limits of coverage needed. Following a drunk driving arrest insurance becomes more complicated, just as it does following an accident for the at-fault driver. Your insurance rates will likely increase following an at-fault accident as well as following a drunk driving arrest.

As with accidents, each subsequent drunk driving arrest adds to the likelihood that your insurance rates will go up. The insurance company looks at your entire life circumstance before deciding to drop you from coverage entirely.  Insurance companies look at layers of risk factors so the more risk factors you have for having another accident, the less likely you are to get insurance and if you are responsible in most aspects of your life, an insurance company may be more forgiving in deciding whether to continue coverage.

If you are employed, own a home and have financial security that helps your case with insurance companies. If you are unemployed though, or if you are not financially secure and you do have more than one drunk driving arrest, insurance companies begin to question whether you are worth the risk they will take in insuring you. It is important to note that almost every driver can get some type of insurance, but it may come at a very high price based on your history of arrests, traffic citations, and accidents.
