Vermont DUI laws are among the strictest in the country. Vermont has enacted laws that allow them to look back across your entire lifetime if you are charged with with a DUI. This is limited to the judicial system and not to the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles. However, this is a very serious issue if you have been previously convicted of a DUI in Vermont.
Vermont DUI Laws are very strict
Since Vermont DUI laws are considered one of the strictest in the country, you need to know the consequences. A first offense under Vermont DUI laws can result in jail time of up to two years, license suspension for up to ninety days and fines up to $750. In addition, to these charges, your insurance company is going to add on a minimum of $160 to your insurance as a surcharge. You will not automatically have your license restored either. License reinstatement is unlikely to occur until you have completed specific requirements including an alcohol and driver education program, a therapy assessment and you have completed a program that is required in the state of Vermont.
Subsequent convictions under Vermont DUI laws carry far more serious consequences including losing your driver's license for life if you are convicted a third time. Mandatory jail time also is included for subsequent convictions. In addition, when you apply for your license you consent to mandatory blood alcohol testing, refusing a test will automatically cost you your driver's license. A complete understanding of Vermont DUI laws is critical for every Vermont driver.
