Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest National Campaign

City of San Francisco, Nov 26, 2007

During the year of 2005, 139 people were injured as a result of collisions caused by impaired drivers and an additional 5 were killed.  These numbers were greatly reduced by efforts of all the law enforcement agencies throughout San Francisco during the year of 2006.  Unfortunately, 86 individuals were injured and 2 killed.  “These numbers are still unacceptable” stated Captain Greg Corrales of the SFPD Traffic Company.

One street alone accounted for 6 of these collisions with an additional 4 collisions in the immediate area last year.  For this reason, the San Francisco Police Department along with other enforcement agencies will be conducting a DUI/DL checkpoint on this street.  It is the goal of this Department to make as many people as possible aware of the dangers of driving while impaired.  “If we can get our message across to the occupants of five hundred vehicles, it’s worth it.” Says Sergeant Gile Pursley, “even if it results in the arrest of some of the drivers.  I’d be perfectly happy if we made no arrests, especially if there were no DUI collisions this year.”

Media will be notified as to the exact location two hours prior to operation.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
