Customs/Hidalgo PD's Operation Cat Posts Successful Results, Customs Also Seizes Marijuana, Coke, and Ecstasy This Week

Hidalgo, Tex. -- As holiday traffic mounted this week, U.S. Customs inspectors helped keep our teens and streets safe, and also prevented $1.5 million in narcotics from entering the country.

Customs teamed up with Hidalgo Police Department this past weekend for Operation Caring About Teens (CAT), a public safety initiative that places police officers at the port of entry to enforce drunk driving laws and curfew ordinances. Hidalgo Police Chief Vernon Rosser reported the following results from Operation CAT's first weekend: police officers arrested 27 juveniles for curfew and public intoxication violations and 67 adults ages 17 to 30 for public intoxication violations. Of the 67 adults arrested, only 13 were of legal drinking age by state law. Rosser and Customs Port Director David Higgerson lauded the operation's success from a public safety standpoint and said that Operation CAT will continue through the holiday season on a sporadic, unpredictable basis

Drunk driving is a crime. More importantly, it is not a victimless crime. Nearly 17,000 Americans are killed and more than 700,000 are injured each year in alcohol related traffic crashes .
