An Additional, 22.3% Felony Drunk Driving Cases Were Tried
The trial of violent offenders continues to be a high priority for the County Attorney. 48.4% of all felony trials involved a defendant charged with a violent crime, including aggravated assault, sexual assault, armed robbery or drive by shootings.An additional, 22.3% felony drunk driving cases were tried. Maximum sentences are sought to remove violent offenders from the community for as long as possible. The Victim Witness Program made 15,923 victim contacts including 24 hour on-scene crisis intervention services, court accompaniment, advocacy, assistance with victim compensation and referral to other community agencies. The Civil Division, excluding the cases handled by the Mental Health Unit, managed an active case load of 1,183 cases during calendar year 2004. The largest majority of these cases were tax and bankruptcy cases (641), zoning, building and environmental code enforcement and land use cases (272) and tort and personal injury (92). The Bad Check Program has approximately 5700 merchants participating with the total collections in the amount of $1,092,810 in restitution returned to the victims of bad checks during fiscal year 2003/04. The 88-Crime Unit has, since inception, approved more than $1,100,000 in cash rewards and assisted in the recovery of more than $92,000,000 in total property. The Act Now Truancy Program conducted 4 truancy sweeps during fiscal year 2003/04 resulting in 198 truant arrests, 31 parent citations, 11 additional juvenile delinquent arrests and 257 home visits.
