Talking Urinals in New Mexico to Deliver Message
New Mexico has a new tool to help fight drunk driving in restrooms throughout the state. New Mexico recently purchased 500 urinal cakes that will play an anti-DWI message. The talking urinal cakes are activated by motion sensor and will play messages such as "Hey there, big guy. Having a few drinks?", "You drink, you drive, you lose" or "It's time to call a cab or ask a sober friend for a ride home." in a female voice.
The spokesman for the state's Transportation Department said the high tech urinal cakes are a way to reach male drivers who statically commit drunken-driving infractions 3 times more than women. The inventor of the talking urinal cakes, Richard Deutsch, says there is nothing on the market like his device. "The idea is based on the concept that there is no more captive audience than a guy standing at a urinal." Other states including New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Minnesota have used these devices for public awareness campaigns as well as commercial advertisers. Healthquest Technologies Inc., a New York-based company, is now the manufacturer of the product.
New Mexico is planning to distribute the urinal cakes to Santa Fe bars and restaurants. Each urinal cake cost the state $21 but bars and lasts about three months.
