If you have been accused with Driving While Intoxicated, it is quite possible that you can fight and win your case. More people fight their DWI charges than any other kind of crime in Texas. The reason that so many people fight their DWI charges is simple. DWI is a subjective crime. The lawyer that you choose can truly make the difference as to whether you are found guilty or not guilty.
Why does your lawyer choice make such a substantial difference? Some DWI defense lawyers are good and experienced, and others are lazy and unknowledgeable. You will want a "good" lawyer for this very serious charge. How will you know the attorney is good? Unless you or a close friend has hired the lawyer in the past, it is really hard to know for certain, but I advise you to do your homework on the lawyer.
What to Ask Potential Attorneys
Be sure to interview any lawyer that you are thinking of hiring. After all, this choice is a huge investment in your future. Some examples of questions that I would ask are:
- What percentage of your practice is devoted to criminal defense? (a high percentage is preferred because it indicates more experience)
- Have you obtained good results for prior DWI defendants? (the lawyer should readily be able to give you examples of positive results from past clients without breaking attorney client privilege rules)
- What is your case strategy or plan for my case in particular? (the lawyer should be able to lay out his or her plan and tailor it specifically to what you think is best for your case as well. The plan should be efficient and something that you are comfortable with)
- Have you ever brought a DWI to trial before? (the lawyer should have conducted DWI trials in the past as again this will mean that the lawyer has experience)
- Have you ever won a DWI trial before? (it is always nice to hire someone that has a solid record for defending DWI clients in trial)
- What will this cost me? (of course, you can only hire the lawyer if you can afford to).
- What is your work philosophy? (this question gives a lawyer the chance to express to you his or her own personal idea of what the best way to practice law is. See if this philosophy is what you want in a lawyer that you hire)
- How long will this take? (a lawyer that knows his or her DWI defense will easily be able to tell you different time ranges depending on your individual case)
- How can I get a hold of you? (your lawyer MUST be accessible to you. You will find that you will want to be able to call, text or e-mail your lawyer as you are going through this difficult time)
There are many other questions that you might want to ask before choosing on your DWI defense lawyer, but this gives you a place to start with your decision making.
Remember that this is an investment in your future. If you are planning to fight a DWI charge, Connor Law Office wishes you all the best, and of course would be honored if you chose our firm to represent you.
